Filters (2021)

A short film following serial dater Natalie as she navigates life and love in the city, experiencing the pleasures and perils of online dating along the way. “Filters” explores what it’s like to pursue relationships when you have the world at your fingertips and asks; what does it take to create a real and lasting connection when all of our experiences are filtered by an increasingly digital world? What’s it like to see yourself as others see you? What is life like without the Filters?

Filters is a multi-award winning short film by Katie Moskal & Mark S. Wright. The film was created as a unique filmmaking experiment, we had the idea to tell a story about making connections in an increasingly digital world and wanted to execute that idea using techniques and methods that reflect the modern age of filmmaking we live in.

Large portions of the world now have access to 4k video recording and editing capabilities right in their pockets - what does it mean to connect with an ensemble cast and tell a story of dating, social media, and online personas in today’s connected environment?

In making Filters, we merged traditional filmmaking techniques with a more experimental montage sequence where we connected with actors who performed with our lead Rachel in natural environments and captured these encounters on a smartphone. The result, we hope, is a funny, thought-provoking tale about honesty and learning to be comfortable in oneself, to show that it is possible to make meaningful, lasting connections in an always-online world.

In 2021, Filters was a part of the Official Selections for the Berlin Indie Film Festival, London Lift-Off Film Festival, and Golden Short Film Festival, and won awards at the Newham Film Festival in London, the World Film Carnival in Singapore, Big Fridge International Film Festival, and The Gladiator Film Festival. In 2022, Filters also received Honorable Mentions at the London International Monthly Film Festival, Screener Short Films and was a Finalist at the Romance Rules Film Festival in Australia.
